How to make a tie-dye t-shirt: Captain America style

With the festival season in full swing tie dye is everywhere and if you’re looking for a way to stand out from the usual crowd then how about a twist on the classic.

You will need:

Fabric Dye in Blue and Red, 100% Cotton T-Shirt (we used one from Tesco), elastic bands, gloves, plastic bag, star and circle templates (we downloaded a star and used plates for the circles), dye bottles – you can buy these from most places, just anything really with a nozzle.

First start by drawing your circles onto the t-shirt lightly in pencil or chalk – I used pencil and it acted as a slight resist on the shirt so is noticeable sometimes.

Next fold your t-shirt in half, as per the below video, and trace half of your star on, lining up the centre points.

Now follow the instructions on the video below for how to fold up the t-shirt.

Now for a trickier bit, you need to tie your other elastic bands around the lines of the circle – I found that provided I followed the part of the line that was visible, the circles worked.

Right, onto the fun part!  Mix up your dye as per the packet instructions (remembering to add salt as a fixture if it requires it).  You’ll be working with an area a bit like the triangle section below, the main thing to remember is which colour goes where!

I found it useful to put a plastic bag around the end part (that will become the star) to keep it clean and white – dye can be pesky and splash around!

Cover the shirt with the dye in the right areas – so the star stays white, the next band is blue, then red, leave white, red and then blue for the rest of the shirt.  Make sure to get into the creases of the tied up bits.  Don’t worry too much if colours splash onto the wrong area – it’s tie-dye after all, but try and keep the star clean.

Following the instructions from the video, leave in a plastic bag overnight and rinse out then wash in the morning.

You should end up with something like this ….

The possibilities are endless!  If you wanted to do a whole range of Avengers themed shirts you could adapt the instructions – so for iron man you would just have a circle in the middle.

Have fun! And send us photos of your finished pieces, we’d love to see!!  info@inkberrowdesigncentre.co.uk
